A “Fantastick” Return to FoxHound Stage

Ten years ago, Foxcroft students performed The Fantasticks as the 2012 spring production. This past Friday and Saturday night, the story and characters entranced the audience just as they did back then. Not only did this year’s cast and crew do an amazing job with the production, but the community finally returned to the auditorium for the first in-person musical performing arts production on FoxHound stage since the pandemic began.
The story of The Fantasticks follows The Boy, Matt (Katelyn S. ’24) and The Girl, Luisa (Caroline M. ’22) who, despite the best efforts of their fathers, played by Emmy Q. ’24 and Moss L. ’22, fall in love — not even a wall between their houses can stop them. Act I captures the beginning stages of love, conniving plans gone awry (How could a staged abduction possibly fail?), and ultimately happiness. But the feeling is fleeting.

The Narrator, El Gallo (Heidi D. ’23); The Old Actor, Henry (Lauren de W. ’22); and The Man Who Dies, Mortimer (Ray L. ’23) are a nefarious trio, and once they get involved, the love story goes sideways in Act II. Matt and Luisa become unhappy with one another, Luisa falls for El Gallo and the pair travel to Venice and beyond, while Matt falls into a downward spiral — and through it all, The Mute (Chelsie E. ’22) watches and steadfastly stands by.

In the end, young love carries through, and Matt and Luisa reunite. Foxcroft’s theater students did an amazing job portraying these characters and bringing the longest-playing show in American theater history to life. Between their costumes, makeup, and mannerisms, it was no easy feat to identify some of them — they stepped into their roles so well!  View the digital program here. The performances were a fitting close to a wonderful week celebrating the arts. Kudos to the entire cast, Director Karin Thorndike, accompanist Eric Dombrowski, and the entire Technical Crew for a job well done. It was truly “Fantastick!”
