Hounds Take The Cup for Second Year in a Row!

Once again tan and white ruled the court at the Athletic/Student Center when Foxcroft’s oldest and most beloved tradition, Fox/Hound Basketball, was played with all the enthusiasm, pageantry, and intense competition we have come to expect and enjoy.
The Hounds not only defeated the Foxes, 22-11, in Big Game to claim the coveted Cup for the second year in a row, but they also won Middle Game, 14-13, and Little Game, 4-2. The Hounds even took the Staff/Faculty game — a fun addition to this year’s Fox/Hound festivities — 6-4 for a full sweep of the weekend's events!

On Friday, the Puppy and Cub teams played fast and loose with neither team scoring until the final quarter, where an exchange of baskets left the Puppies on top. Middle Game saw a much more intense back and forth but, even with some excellent free-throw shooting by the Foxes, the Hounds were able to take the final lead as the clock wound down.

Saturday’s Big Game began with Foxes scoring first on a “nothing but net” free throw from Adair S. ’22 that was immediately followed by a Hound three-pointer from Lucy M. ’23 to put them in the lead. The Foxes answered with a couple of baskets keeping the game close and allowing the Hounds just a two-shot, 9-5, lead to close out the first half. After that, though, it was all Hounds as they took a commanding 17-7 lead at the end of the third period. True to the Foxcroft tradition of playing hard to the end, the Foxes battled relentlessly, but a final three-pointer by Lucy — a bookend to her first — sealed the 22-11 win for the Hounds.

When the last seconds finally ticked away, Leipheimer Gymnasium — which had been rocking all morning with the deafening drums and cheers of both teams and the crowd of students, faculty, alumnae, and parents all decked out in their buttons and colors — erupted just a little bit louder as the Hounds tied their ribbons and triumphantly raised The Cup.

Both sides played their hearts out and the spirit of the Fox/Hound tradition — true friends through and to the end — came to the fore as there were hugs and cheers for teammates and rivals alike and another round of thunderous cheers before students and faculty headed off to Spring Break.

Thank you to all who came out to support their team and enjoy this treasured tradition!
