Students Treated to Masterclass with Guest Musician Dr. Elizabeth Holmes

From Voice Instructor and Music Coordinator Dr. Morgan Brower

On Tuesday evening, Dr. Elizabeth Holmes visited campus to teach a masterclass to our voice and chorale students. Four performers, Mary J. ’23, Caroline M. ’22, Nova S. ’23, and Lynn Z. ’23, performed pieces from either musical theater or a classical repertoire and were each given a 20-minute lesson in front of an audience. Dr. Holmes’ extensive knowledge of the different vocal styles and pedagogical approaches to singing made the masterclass not only a fantastic learning experience for our student performers but the audience members as well!
Dr. Holmes is a versatile performer and teacher of singing specializing in classical and musical theater styles. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory, a Master of Music degree from West Virginia University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University. She has studied contemporary commercial music at the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute of Shenandoah Conservatory and studied abroad in both Italy and Austria.

Equally at home singing opera or belting, Dr. Holmes has performed extensively in professional opera, musical theater, and concert productions in the Philadelphia area before moving to Virginia for her doctoral studies. Favorite roles include Adina in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, Monica in The Medium, Angelina in Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury, June in Musical of Musicals: The Musical, and Peaches/Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera.

Dr. Holmes has been teaching voice since 2005 and is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Musical Theatre Educators Alliance (MTEA). Her students have achieved a wide variety of goals, including appearances on The Voice, professional performances off-Broadway and in regional opera and musical theater organizations, leading roles in high school and community theater musicals, singing in elite choirs, admission to competitive collegiate voice programs, and preparing for careers in music therapy and music education. She currently teaches applied voice at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA, and at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV.
