Plans for Foxcroft's Inaugural Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Continuing through the week and weekend, events are planned to further educate and engage the community. The student-led diversity, equity, and inclusion club We the People plans to give a presentation on Dr. King’s social justice initiatives during Friday’s Morning Meeting, and a screening of Selma that evening will provide students a glimpse into the 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, AL.
 
Saturday at 1pm, students will give back to the community through several service projects, much as Dr. King did through his work that directly impacted and improved the lives of all people. Opportunities include:

• Making hygiene kits for UMCOR and Mobile Hope 
• Sorting clothing donations for Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter (LAWS)
• Writing notes for A Wider Circle
• Assembling backpacks for Dulles South Food Pantry

On Saturday evening, there will also be a screening of the documentary Mending Walls, a film illustrating the healing process of art for mural artists working through challenging conversations about race, status, and their personal experiences. On Sunday at 2pm, a Facebook Live panel discussion, hosted by HandsOn Greater Richmond and the Mending Walls RVA lead artist Hamilton Glass, and a small group discussion will give students space to reflect on the work of leaders like Dr. King and take an active role in the work that remains. As part of our “Understanding Hearts” grade level curriculum, juniors will jump start their fundraising efforts during a workshop at 1pm centered around best practices of "making the ask" and will set up their online donation pages. Students are expected to attend at least one of the MLK events over the weekend. 
 
Our celebration will culminate on Monday, January 17, when all students will gather at 4:30pm to participate in a reflection and sharing activity, followed by a banquet (both events are required for students). During that time, students will have the opportunity to not only reflect on the work of Dr. King but also the link between the service activities they performed and his missions.
