Emily Dietz ’17 Invites Students to Learn About Fire Protection Engineering

Alumna Emily Dietz ’17 visited campus last week to talk about Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) and the program at the University of Maryland (UMD). FPE students use predictive modeling, innovative building and product design, risk analysis, human behavioral studies, and other engineering methods to protect people from fire. Emphasizing that FPE at UMD is the only ABET-accredited undergraduate program in the world, she also noted that the field is experiencing explosive global growth in job opportunities.
Emily then invited interested students to participate in a virtual information session on Thursday, October 14 from 4-5:30pm. Students will watch demonstrations of fire research, have a virtual tour of the lab spaces, talk with current students, and meet faculty. An RSVP is required to attend

Currently a graduate assistant for recruitment in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering, Emily was inspired to pursue fire protection engineering by her interactions with former Foxcroft Campus Safety Coordinator Mollie Sheerin, who always incorporated opportunities for student education into her work, including bringing fire protection officers to campus for workshops and teaching students proper technique for using fire extinguishers, among other things.
