Results Are In for the Best in Show

This year’s collection of Senior One Woman Shows has been a visual delight on the main floor of Schoolhouse since the exhibits opened during Arts Week. Many people shared positive comments about how enjoyable it was to experience these works and to read about each artists’ creative journeys. Everyone was invited to weigh in on a favorite piece by submitting an online voting form to determine who would be awarded the “Best in Show.”
This year’s collection of Senior One Woman Shows has been a visual delight on the main floor of Schoolhouse since the exhibits opened during Arts Week. Many people shared positive comments about how enjoyable it was to experience these works and to read about each artists’ creative journeys. Everyone was invited to weigh in on a favorite piece by submitting an online voting form to determine who would be awarded the “Best in Show.”
There were six total portfolios encompassing a wide range of media and themes. Liliana G. ’21 displayed her photographs of “Spring and Snow'' on campus. The image that won her honorable mention was a winter scene titled, “Un Borro,” which is Spanish for “Donkey.” The collection of photos presented by Emma N. ’21 was titled, “Religion in Photography” which was also the culmination of her concentration in Global Studies exploring religious symbols in various cultures. Her colorized image of “A Different World'' earned her an honorable mention as well. The final honorable mention was awarded to Teagan S. ’21 who explored “Technology and Nature” with her life-size ceramic cat entangled in wires titled, “Playful Creature.”
The top three artworks were all created using mixed media techniques. Elsie R. ’21 received third place recognition for her work titled, “Unzipping My Anxiety.” Her work demonstrates the pressures and stresses of schoolwork that can divide the personality. Isobel D. ’21 received second place with her piece, “Aghaidh i bhfolach,” which in Irish translates to “Hidden Face,” and represents underlying mental health issues that are not always visible.
Finally, Best in Show was awarded to Dami O. ’21 for her mixed media piece, “Don’t Touch My Hair.” This work also earned her a silver medal at the 2021 National Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Her portfolio is described in the following artist statement:
“The artist has thoughtfully reflected on the pervasive and harmful effects of beauty standards in the world...The artist decided to explore these themes through the presentation of her natural hair journey in order to comment on this aspect of society and to invite the viewer to reflect as well...Her work ultimately strives to allow the viewer to get a glimpse of the feelings, the experiences, and the highs and lows, associated with a natural hair journey. The intention while creating the portfolio was also to showcase the effects of rigid beauty standards on the human psyche.”
This designation of Best in Show also comes with the great honor of having Dami’s piece adopted into our permanent art collection. This work spoke to the Foxcroft community in a dramatic way and it will continue to impact viewers for many years to come.
