Foxcroft Girls Lift Others Up Through Service

By Beth O'Quinn, Experiential Learning & Student Life Coordinator

Yes, we are in the midst of a pandemic, but Foxcroft girls have persevered and many of our students have continually embodied the School’s core values of respect, integrity, and kindness through service throughout the year. They have contributed to our School community, our local community, and their communities back at home.
While our students were home over Winter and Spring Breaks, many of them found ways to help out in their hometowns. Avery H. ’23 wrote letters of thanks and support to deployed troops and first responders. Sage W. ’23 and Victoria T. ’22 lifted spirits and provided delicious food to senior citizens who have felt extra isolated this year, and to families in Mexico struggling with food insecurity, respectively. Our Girl Scout leader Leah N. ’22 created literacy sensor boxes for the All Ages Read Together preschool program and packed reusable hygiene product boxes to be shipped to girls in Africa. Elsie R. ’21 volunteered at Mobile Hope and Seven Loaves Food Pantry and Lilly R. ’21 worked making “to-go bags” for public school kids doing at-home learning in her hometown. Ellen B. ’21 worked with her mom planting trees along Goose Creek in the Middleburg area.

Over the past few weeks, our students have participated in several on-campus service projects. Last week’s newsletter shared the story of a group of students who are creating a playground design for Banneker Elementary School. In addition, the entire sophomore class engaged in on-campus service work helping to pick up trash, assist with work in the Office of Institutional Advancement and in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library, and start seeds for the Foxcroft Garden. It was great to see the sophomores work together as a team! Still, more students worked towards earning a WeekendMission Service badge by packing up boxes of food from this year’s food drive to go to local families in need of extra support while the Loudoun County Public Schools were on Spring Break. Another group created over 100 hygiene kits for Seven Loaves Food Pantry!

Service to others also comes in the form of leadership. It is worth noting that many of our students have worked throughout the year as CAPS for our Admission Office and as members of the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation Board. They have also been strong student leaders in the dorms, on the Honor Council and Student Council, and have hosted discussions and leadership workshops to help inform next year’s group of great student leaders.

This update does not cover every volunteer or leadership effort each girl has contributed, as there are too many to mention in this short bit of news, but I can say with certainty that we can all be proud of the contributions of service Foxcroft girls have made to their communities during a year when their help was very much needed and greatly appreciated!
