Foxcroft Riders ‘Jump’ at Chance to Compete Over Spring Break

By Kate Worsham, Director of Riding

Although the pandemic threw us a bit of a curveball this fall and winter in terms of maintaining our regular horse show calendar, the riders worked diligently both with their regular trainers and with visiting clinicians so that they could be ready to jump back into competitive action when the opportunity arose. This came about during Spring Break when some of the Foxcroft riders traveled to Lexington to participate in two House Mountain horse shows at the Virginia Horse Center. Over the weekends of February 27 and March 13, a handful of students competed in the jumper divisions at these unrated competitions. This was an excellent opportunity to check on their progress and have some fun in the show ring.
Riding her regular partner, Stryker, Cecilia M. ’22 started off well by earning a win in her first-ever class at the .95 meter height at the February show. She came back to Foxcroft between the two shows and fine-tuned a few things and then was able to return and sweep the .95 division and earn the championship! We are excited to help her move into the Low Children's jumpers classes at the rated shows in June.

Also at the February show was Sage W. ’23 with her horse Rudy. This pair put in some technically savvy clear rounds in their classes and had fun snuggling together when they were not in the ring.

Irene B. ’24 was able to catch ride a Foxcroft horse, Cimarron, in the jumpers during the March show in order to keep her skills up to speed while her horse was recuperating from an injury. Cim had taken a two-year break from showing himself and is most often found in the hunter ring, so the horse show venue and the jumper ring could have left him a bit wide-eyed, but he handled himself like a seasoned pro and Irene rode beautifully to earn ribbons in their division as well.

Elaine P. ’22 and her new horse, Fritz, enjoyed getting to know each other in a horse show setting. Traveling to the Horse Center allowed them to learn more about each other as they start their partnership together. Elaine enthusiastically cheered for professional rider Gordon Reistrup who took the reins to give Fritz some show miles. Earning the reserve championship at the February show and the championship at the March show leads us to believe that Fritz has a bright future in the show ring. Elaine was able to have some quality lesson time with Director of Riding, Kate Worsham, while at the venue as well.

The team of Foxcroft trainers and students all had a great time being off-campus to focus on some riding skills, earn some ribbons, and enjoy some great camaraderie. Everyone is looking forward to some upcoming local spring shows as well as the adventures that await at Upperville and Loudoun Benefit in June.
