14 Students Earn Prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

A group of 14 Foxcroft students created 15 outstanding works of art and three exceptional written works that recently received special recognition in the 2021 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards regional competition.

Four students each achieved the coveted Gold Key status — the highest regional designation. The “golden” artists are seniors Ellen B. (sculpture) and Dami O. (mixed media) and juniors Natalie C. (digital art) and Jordan M. (ceramics).
As regional winners, their Gold Key works are now being judged at the national level by a panel of noted visual and literary world leaders in New York City. Should their works be chosen as National Medalists, the students will be invited to a ceremony at Carnegie Hall and their works included in a nationwide traveling exhibition. This year, students in grades 7-12 submitted more than 100,000 works of art and writing in 28 categories; so advancing to the national competition is no small feat.

In addition to her Gold Key award, Dami collected two of the seven Silver Keys received by Foxcroft students, one each for her art portfolio and mixed media submissions. Silver Keys for artwork also went to juniors Jordan and Clare T. (ceramics), as well as junior Helen V. and freshman Claire M. (photography). Writer Tami F. ’21 received a Silver Key for her flash fiction.

Honorable Mentions were earned by writers Avery H. ’22 (poetry collection) and Amelia F. ’22 (personal essay), as well as artists Nia D. ’22 and Emma N. ’21 (photography) and Elsie R. ’21 (mixed media). Dami earned an Honorable Mention for printmaking in addition to her Gold and Silver Keys.

Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in partnership with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country. It is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program recognizing the accomplishments of students in middle and high school.

Among the artistic luminaries who have served as judges are Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Edwidge Danticat, David Sedaris, Nikki Giovanni, and Roz Chast. The list of past winners is equally impressive with Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Sylvia Plath, and filmmaker Ken Burns — as well as Foxcroft Fine Arts teacher Karin Thorndike — among the honored.
