A Reflection on the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC)

From Dami O. ’21

Last December, I had the opportunity to attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) and dialogue with such a diverse group of peers. Though we all had different experiences that formed the different lenses with which we perceived the world, our uniting factor was our determination to effect change regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our campus communities. Thus, in the conference, we discussed topics ranging from socioeconomic privilege to our own personal experiences.
In discussions around difficult topics like racial discrimination, I had the chance to open up and share my own experiences. Through listening to the differing experiences and ideas of my peers, I was able to learn about the diversity within each community as well as how to be a better ally to other communities. Though at times it was difficult to be vulnerable with people I had just recently met, through sharing my experiences and hearing others’ experiences, I ultimately learned a lot and had an enriching experience. I truly enjoyed the discussions as they encouraged me to assess issues from a different lens, and thus allowed me to learn more.

My experience at SDLC truly provided me insights on how to foster and facilitate discussion in a space full of diverse voices where everyone feels safe to share their experiences while simultaneously learning from their peers, and I would recommend anyone who’s interested in attending to attend!
