Global Studies Concentration Speaker Encourages Finding Purpose on Career Path

From Dr. Anne Mueller, Global Studies Concentration Coordinator and French Teacher

On the Wednesday morning before Winter Break, students and faculty welcomed Tom Clark (parent of Julia ’21) as our latest Global Studies Concentration speaker. Currently working at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Clark has had an exceptional career in the arena of international law and development. He explained his journey, which began with an inspiring professor at Harvard who encouraged him to seek a path of purpose in his work. Clark’s goal has long been to seek justice in a variety of settings, but most recently through financial inclusion at Asia’s foremost public bank.
In attendance were many students, including all Global Studies Concentration scholars. Lexi H. ’23, who is studying marketing for her concentration, reflected: “My favorite part of Mr. Clark's talk was learning about how the ADB uses banking to create change. He talked about how they have loans that are contingent on a country diversifying the workplace, becoming more eco-friendly, and more.” Emma C. ’22, who is researching the relationship between fashion and political movements, added, “Mr. Clark’s talk was very insightful to the world of international jobs and travels. I felt very inspired to continue to pursue my interests in global studies afterward.”

Clark’s talk provided unique insights into the cross-section of law and banking, allowing students to envision several possible career paths. His reflections on the importance of living abroad and experiencing different cultures were inspiring, and his lessons for the students were clear — find a purpose and follow it!
