Empowering Female Voices Program Inspires Students to Make Change in the World

This fall, several Foxcroft students have been participating in a six-part online workshop titled "Empowering Female Voices" offered to girls in grades 9-12 nationwide and hosted by Close Up and the Hockaday Institute for Social Impact. Focused on civic engagement and the issues shaping the 2020 presidential election, the program sessions ran every Thursday beginning October 1, through last Thursday, November 5. Through hearing from our students about their experiences, it is evident that the program had an impact on their global perspectives and has empowered them to delve into current issues with confidence and determination.
Sarah F. ’24 provided this reflection following the final session:

“During our last Empowering Female Voices session, we talked about what we could do to make a change in the topic we felt passionate about. One of the issues in the world that I feel strongly about is climate change and trying to save our planet. We also discussed the steps we could do to achieve our goal, and what are some of the ways that we could get there.

A lot of us wanted to get together a group of people for this because trying to tackle a huge topic like climate change is a tough task. Since we are in the middle of a pandemic, it is kind of hard to get a lot done, but we all seemed to agree that just spreading awareness online through social media would be the easiest and most effective method of making a change for right now.

Overall, I thought this was a good wrap-up for our time together, because after deliberating all of the issues, now we can actually start to make a change in the world, even if it is just here in our Foxcroft community.”

Following are some additional takeaways from the girls.

“This program gives you the opportunity to connect with students outside of the Foxcroft community and broaden your perspectives on ongoing issues.” – Olivia W. ’23

“Not all students have the same opportunity to have leadership positions and share their opinion as we do at Foxcroft.” – Hays T. ’21

“I loved how encouraging the mentors for each session were. They did so much to encourage participants to expand their thoughts on any given topic. They were wonderful at moderating each discussion too.” – Elsie R. ’21

“I think [the program] did an excellent job picking topics that would grab our attention. The discussions were also well monitored and everyone who got a chance to discuss was able to.” – Maddy G. ’22

“The program... is a place for strong independent women to speak their mind on current issues. I liked that we could share our opinions without fear of being judged.” – Sarah F. ’24

“[I liked] how they gave everyone a chance to discuss and have their voices heard.” – Avery H. ’23

“That there are many different ways to get your point across and that you're not alone.” – Sofia R. ’24

“It was so uplifting to hear all these different people come together and discuss so many important issues.” – Mimi W. ’24
