Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Speakers Inspire Foxcroft Community

Twice in two weeks, Foxcroft had the pleasure of hearing Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellows present online keynote addresses to the community reminding us to use our voices for good and aim high in leadership and life.
First, we heard Dr. Marcia Chatelain, Professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University, who used a particularly poignant quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a framework for her presentation. Drawing upon the history of civil rights, inclusive pedagogy, and public service, she talked about speaking up, engaging on behalf of the greater good, and taking action for social issues. In addition to her ideas and thoughts around community, she ultimately shared her belief that Dr. King’s entire quote, particularly his sentiment that “we still have a choice,” is as true today as it was in 1967.

Dr. Chatelain also conducted two workshops during her time with Foxcroft. In a session with faculty and staff, she focused on the societal changes currently impacting teaching like COVID-19 and the greater reach of the Black Lives Matter Movement. With the student leaders, Chatelain highlighted the stories of young people throughout history who have agitated for change, reminding them that they have the capacity to make change happen.

The second Goodyear Fellow to address our community was Deborah Lee James, 23rd Secretary of the Air Force and author of Aim High: Chart Your Course and Find Success (2019), who delivered the keynote during our school-wide Leadership Day. Using lessons learned from her life and career, James offered the audience her Aim High formula for personal and professional fulfillment, presenting three essential actions and strategies for accomplishing each.

James also spent time speaking with our student leaders and Honor Council about using your voice for good and modeling the behavior you seek in others. The students in both groups peppered James with questions, perhaps encouraged by the story in her keynote of how her failure to achieve her life’s dream to serve in the diplomatic corps, which though devastating at the time, ended up being the catalyst for a life she could never have imagined. It was inspirational and yet full of practical wisdom as well.
