Passing Down and Moving Up

This year’s Athletic Association Banquet was unique, yet familiar, and a true tearjerker for all in attendance. Conducted last Saturday evening via Zoom due to the pandemic, the Athletic Association members had to completely rethink the way they planned the evening. While there would be no actual banquet, of course, the process to pass down leadership needed to be as special – if not more so – than in years before. And they nailed it!
Saturday morning, the theme of “Aladdin: Diamond in the Rough” was revealed when students, faculty, and staff all received Zoom backgrounds for use during the Banquet, followed by the program for the evening featuring a mix of recorded and live leadership hand downs. Little did we know that the live portion would contain a surprise for the girls and the audience!

The program began at 7pm, with everyone dressed in their Fox/Hound best and the Aladdin-themed backgrounds transporting us all to the imaginary land of Agrabah for the evening (no matter where we were in real life). Pre-recorded videos of students passing down leadership positions for a host of student clubs and organizations were shown first.

Then, the live passing down of leadership positions began. The Activities Committee went first, followed by the Athletic Association and ending with Fox/Hound. As each Fox/Hound position was handed down, we witnessed something that had never been done before: a family member placed the cap on the girl receiving her new position. Prior to the Banquet, the caps had been mailed to each recipient’s parents who were sworn to secrecy until the moment their daughter’s name was announced. It was a wonderful way to keep this tradition alive! After the last caps were given – to new Hound Captain Harriet B. ’21 and new Fox Captain Betsy A. ’21 – the outgoing Fox/Hound Captains, Louise W. ’20 and Abby A. ’20, reminded the new officers and mascots of another tradition – wearing their caps for 24 hours, even if that meant sleeping in them!

It was another successful Athletic Association Banquet with all of the tears, spirit, and surprises that we have come to expect while allowing grace and space for new traditions as well, proving, once again, that Foxcroft girls are resilient problem-solvers.

Many thanks to the Athletic Association and faculty advisor Michelle Woodruff, as well as faculty members Matt Norko and Ryan Farrington for their technical expertise, and of course Hound Backer Patty Boswell and Foxy Fellow Alex Northrup, for all their support in making this wonderful evening come together!
