Service in the time of Miss Charlotte

By Lily Fleming Norton ’56
Back when I was at Foxcroft we had two places to "share" with the community, either teaching art to lower classes in the public school in Middleburg or volunteering at The Loudoun Fauquier Health Center. I had always had an interest in medicine and chose the Health Center.
We were picked up at school – usually by Mrs. Duffy or another nice lady – and we spent the afternoon taking temperatures, writing histories on patients, and assisting the doctor (usually Dr. Gibson or Dr. McConnell) and nurse. There was one RN with us – a fabulous lady, whose name I cannot remember. Before being taken back to campus, we would go across the street to the old Drug Store and have ice cream.

On several occasions Miss Charlotte would drive us to town – this was a hair-raising experience! I don't believe that Miss Charlotte drove much. We would rocket down that winding road, mostly on the wrong side, as Miss Charlotte kept talking to us and LOOKING back at us. If we met another car, they promptly got out of the way!

I volunteered for four years. I was joint Head my senior year and served on the Board of The Loudoun Fauquier Health Center when I married and moved back to Middleburg in 1961.

My four years of volunteering at The Health Center were a wonderful experience and an eye-opener to the health and well-being of some of the people in the community and vicinity. I enjoy and applaud what I read about the Foxcroft girls' participation in local organizations.
