Virginia B. ’22 Rides for U.S. Junior Jumping Team and Brings Home Gold

Foxcroft’s own Virginia B. ’22 was recently chosen to represent the United States as part of the prestigious U.S. Junior Jumping Team in the FEI Jumping Young Rider Nations Cup during the Palm Beach Masters CSI last Saturday, February 15. She and her teammates, Mimi G. (New York, NY), Hallie G. (Houston, TX), and Siena V. (Upperville, VA), beat out another U.S. team, as well as teams from Canada, Mexico, Ireland, and a Nations Unite team, to bring home the Gold medal in the $8,000 Junior Team Competition.
“I’m incredibly thankful to Foxcroft for allowing me to come to WEF (Winter Equestrian Festival),” effused Virginia. “Without Foxcroft’s support, I would not have had the opportunity to be here in Wellington. It’s such an honor to participate on a team here and get to know all the other kids. It’s a different animal than the normal, everyday showing. It’s a really great thing to experience when we’re so young.”

After the competition, Foxcroft Experiential Learning & Service Learning Coordinator Beth O’Quinn caught up with Virginia for a brief Q&A to find out more about her experience.

What is your horse's name/age/ breed?
My horse’s name is Efodea or Effie in the barn. She’s a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare and the most talented horse I’ve ever ridden. She has endless scope and a heart to rival that of a lion.

Is Kim Prince, who has participated on 20 Nations Cup teams and had three World Cup Qualifier wins, the coach for your whole team?
Kim is my trainer. There is also the Chef d’Equipe, something like a team manager, and our chef was DiAnn Langer. She was a terrific chef.

How did you qualify for the Nations Cup?
I submitted my application through the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). From the applicants, teams were chosen from the horse-rider combinations that USEF found to have good results and consistent scores.

Have you competed in other Nations Cups and are there more to come for the season?
This was my first time representing the United States. Hopefully, my horse and I will be able to compete in other Nations Cup classes. It has been an incredibly valuable experience to be on a team and represent my country.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience?
Not only are these team classes fun, but they are useful stepping stones in the equestrian pathway. The Youth Nations Cup events prepare riders at a very young age for team classes. Many who compete in these also go on to represent the U.S. on Senior Nations Cup teams.

Congratulations to Virginia and her teammates on a job well done!
