Celebrating Our Global Connections

From International Student Programs Intern Shuhan L. ’21 and Global Cultures Club Assistant Head Chelsie E. ’22

Last Friday night, Schoolhouse took on an entirely new look. Diverse national flags were hanging on the ceiling along with colorful lanterns displaying festival spirits. The highly anticipated International Gala would be held in FoxHound Auditorium, but before that was the Bazaar, where students could experience authentic cultures from different countries.
The Bazaar filled the first floor with a variety of activities. Many international students at Foxcroft took the opportunity to organize these activities to represent their cultures. The activities included a “Chopstick Challenge,” a “How Spicy Can You Eat?” contest, a calligraphy competition, “Guess the Flavor Challenge,” and, new this year, pecha kuchas, a form of storytelling that originated in Japan. We also incorporated “passports” into the Bazaar, where students could check off all of the stations that they participated in to enter a raffle.

At the Gala, students performed songs and poems in German, Chinese, and Spanish to represent different cultures. The dance class brought a dance that combined diverse traditional dancing movements from a variety of countries. The best way to learn about a different culture is through its art, especially dance and music. The Gala showed our audience the beauty of other cultures.

International Week, along with the Bazaar and Gala, was designed to recognize and celebrate various cultures within the Foxcroft community. This year the Global Cultures Club and the International Ambassadors teamed up to plan this successful event for the entire school to enjoy. In addition to planning the Bazaar and Gala, the two groups worked together to plan meals during the week representing cuisines from different cultures, such as Middle Eastern, Chinese, Korean, European, and Latin American.

Everyone involved enjoyed learning and teaching about other cultures and looks forward to International Week again next year.
