International Week Brings Cultures – and Culinary Treats – Together

Monday night's scrumptious dinner featuring Middle Eastern cuisine kicked off a delicious week of food and fun in honor of International Week. The meal brought together a variety of cultures with a menu that included a hummus bar and falafel enjoyed in most Middle Eastern countries; gyros of Greek origin; lavash, a soft unleavened bread, of Armenian and Iranian origin; and batata harra, or Lebanese spicy potatoes.
Like that meal, Foxcroft brings together a variety of cultures, and that is exactly what the Global Cultures Club celebrates during International Week.

So far this week, we’ve been treated to a Korean/Japanese night with Korean bulgogi beef, japchae stirfry noodles, gamja jorim or braised potatoes, and Japanese teriyaki chicken, as well as European and Chinese/Vietnamese food nights. Global Culture Club members have worked with a wonderfully supportive Meriwether Godsey staff to plan the authentic food menus.

And the best is yet to come! The week culminates tomorrow evening with an all-school banquet, aka Hispanic Fiesta, at 6pm, followed by the Bazaar at 7pm and Gala performances at 8pm. The Bazaar will fill the first floor of Schoolhouse with a variety of activities, including the popular “Chopstick Challenge,” a “How Spicy Can You Eat?” contest, a calligraphy competition, “Guess the Flavor Challenge,” PechaKucha storytelling where a presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds of commentary each, international dance party, and more.

The Gala, presented in FoxHound Auditorium, will highlight singing, dancing, and instrumental performances — featuring Shea H. ’20 and Chloe M. ’21 who will teach the crowd bachata, a dance style that originated in the Dominican Republic with Indigenous, African, and European musical elements. Club heads Brianna M. ’20, Bianca M. ’21, and Semin A. ’21 have been organizing the production and co-heads Chelsea E. ’22 and Elizabeth S. ’22 will be our emcees. Families are welcome to attend.
