She will speak to the community about her artistic journey and share her work on Monday, February 24 at 9:25am in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library.

What began as a mother taking pictures of her daughters “celebrating their strengths, imperfections, emotions, and individuality,” as she writes on her website, expanded to using photographs to capture female strength, challenge conventional definitions of female beauty, and reignite “that feeling of ‘I’ve got this. I am awesome. Check me out.’ [that] so many of us once had, but forgot.”

“Within the pages of Strong Is the New Pretty,” writes Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees & Wannabes and the Owning Up Curriculum, in her review of the book, “we see girls as they naturally are and what they want and demand the world to see. They are inspiring, wise, and grounded in the certainty that they will take the world by storm.”

Parker has also launched a philanthropic arm of Strong Is the New Pretty, partnering with organizations like Girls on the Run and The Bully Project that invest in kids’ health and education. Other books by Parker include Strong Is the New Pretty: A Guided Journal, The Heart of a Boy, and the forthcoming Play Like A Girl. Her work has been shown in galleries in New York, Atlanta, Boston, and Los Angeles among others, and has been featured on CNN, NPR, The Today Show, The Washington Post, and Huffington Post.

Following her presentation, Parker will spend the morning at Foxcroft where she will conduct a Master Class with photography students and then host a lunch discussion with yearbook staff, as well as photojournalism and other interested students.

Established in 2007 by Austi Brown ’73 in memory of her mother, the Helen Cudahy Niblack ’42 Arts Lecture Series seeks to bring a variety of fine, literary, performing, and practical artists and designers to Foxcroft to share their work, the nature of the creative process, and the breadth of artistic pursuits with both students and the community.  It has sponsored visits by a Broadway actor and director, a champion cowboy poet, hip-hop artists from Senegal and New York, musicians, storytellers, and more.
