Foxcroft Hosts Workshop for Outdoor and Experiential Educators

On Thursday, January 23, Foxcroft welcomed outdoor and experiential educators from schools and organizations in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia for a workshop designed to share programs and philosophies, and ultimately strengthen the unique learning experiences available to our students.
Emily Johns, Assistant Head of School for Student Life, and Josie Ross, Assistant Dean for Residential Life, kicked off the day, sharing their work weaving experiential and service learning into the financial literacy curriculum, ethical leadership program, and grade-level experience at Foxcroft. Later, the coordinators of Foxcroft’s Academic Concentrations detailed the finer points of each program — STEM, Global Studies, Animal Science, and Fine Arts. Generative discussions followed each session, and the professional exchange of ideas and experiences benefited all in attendance.

Other topics throughout the day included “Mercy, Vulnerability, and the Power of Positive Intention in Student Development” with Woodberry Forest School’s Dean of Students Nolan LaVoie, “Nature Connection for Stress Self-Care” presented by Carolyn Schuler, Executive Director of Wildrock, a nature play and discovery center, and a presentation — complete with a rocket launch! — from AstroCamp Virginia, an outdoor science school and hands-on STEM program with the themes of astronomy and space exploration.
