Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The celebration continued at the banquet, where the Foxcroft community was asked to write on sticky notes how the quotes related to them or made them feel. Once they had penned their reflections, the notes were posted onto a mural located in the center of the Dining Hall showcasing everyone’s feelings and thoughts, and echoing Dr. King’s idea that every voice must be heard. 

Following dinner, several students joined Foxcroft alumnae Kassinda Usher ’93 and Kate Hartshorn Domanski ’96, co-chairs of the Alumnae Council Diversity & Inclusion Committee, for more conversation. These heartfelt discussions covered sensitive topics regarding sexism and racial discrimination and included positive advice for clubs related to diversity and inclusion. The conversation ended on a high note when the hard work of the alumnae, both as students and graduates, was acknowledged as a key factor in helping Foxcroft grow into the welcoming place it is today while inspiring dreams among all of its students – past, present, and future.

We would like to thank the multiple diversity and inclusion clubs at Foxcroft that participated in the evening – We the People, Black Student Union, Hand in Hand (a gender and sexual identity club), Global Cultures, Foxcroft Christian Fellowship, and International Ambassadors. Because of their work, Foxcroft is becoming a more unified community not only in the way that we collaborate as friends but also on a more official level throughout clubs and activities. This event brought us together and helped us to reflect on the different aspects of Dr. King’s work that are so influential to every single person at Foxcroft.

Earlier in the day, a handful of students and faculty also had the opportunity to travel to Episcopal High School in Alexandria for their fourth annual MLK Symposium. This year's theme was “Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.” Foxcroft attended for the first time and had the opportunity to hear a presentation by keynote speaker, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist, and attend student-led workshops and faculty conversations. To learn more about the symposium, click here.
