Looking at the College Admission Process During the Junior Parent College Program

On Monday, January 6, Foxcroft’s sophomores and juniors and their parents spent the day learning more about how the selective college process works. Featured speaker Tim Wolfe, Associate Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admission at the College of William & Mary, provided context and anecdotes from his years of experience.
The program began with a welcome from Head of School Cathy McGehee, followed by Wolfe’s program. He shared information with parents about important factors in selective admission reviews, including rigorous classes and strong grades. After providing some historical context for the stress students have felt during the college application process over time, he encouraged the girls to control the pieces of the process they can – taking challenging classes, working hard, and earning solid grades – and stressed the importance of balance between academics and the other parts of life. Special thanks to him for spending the day with us!

Director of College Counseling Barbara Conner then lead the group in an interactive Kahoot quiz that highlighted specific aspects of college admission before providing an overview of the Foxcroft college process. This approach includes getting to know students early in their time at Foxcroft. Juniors participate in College Seminar sessions (weekly classes in the spring semester of junior year which cover a variety of college application topics), and have individual meetings to personalize the process. In addition, Foxcroft's testing plan encourages students to make the most of their rigorous academics and take advantage of Method Test Prep, which is provided by Foxcroft for all students, before taking the ACT and SAT for the first time in the spring of junior year. Keeping each girl at the heart of the process is key as our college counselors work with every student to help her identify Five First-Choice Colleges for her apply list.

After the break, students and parents formed mock admission committees and reviewed four applications to make decisions about which applicants to admit, defer, wait-list, or deny.

College Seminar classes for juniors will begin on Monday, January 27. Each junior will be scheduled for her individual College Meeting with her College Counselor this spring.
