11th Annual Think Pink Basketball Tournament Slated for Jan. 18

Foxcroft School’s dedication to raising awareness about breast cancer and money to help those affected by the terrible disease will reach an impressive milestone on Saturday, January 18, when the School holds its 11th Annual Think Pink Basketball Tournament.
As 10 teams converge on the School’s Athletic/Student Center for a fun day of varsity, JV, and middle school competition, tournament organizers will celebrate having raised more than $20,000 to benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation (CBBCF) over the past years.

The round-robin tournament, conducted annually by Foxcroft’s student-run Athletic Association and Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff, features non-stop action again this year, with 18 games on three courts beginning at 9am. Admission is open to the public at no charge. Proceeds from t-shirt sales, food concessions, and free-will donations — along with tournament entry fees and sponsorships by local families and businesses — will benefit the CBBCF, an all-volunteer organization based in Middleburg.

Under the direction of coaches Peachie Robinson and Anne Szymendera, Foxcroft will face cross-town rival Middleburg Academy, as well as Randolph-Macon Academy (Front Royal, VA) and King Abdullah Academy (Herndon, VA) in varsity competition. On the JV level, Foxcroft, The Hill School (Middleburg), John Paul the Great (Dumfries, VA), Saint James School (Hagerstown, MD), and Valley Escape, a team comprised of home-schooled students in the Front Royal area, will vie for the title, while King Abdullah, Loudoun Country Day School, Quantico Middle School, and Randolph-Macon Academy comprise the middle school division. Find a complete schedule here (updated 01.13.2020).

Food concession items will be available throughout the day, beginning with coffee, egg sandwiches, and other breakfast items and continuing through lunchtime with a variety of offerings. Snacks and beverages will also be available all day.

Referees, scorers, and other officials mostly donate their time to boost the success of one of the keystone events of Foxcroft’s partnership with CBBCF.  The School participates in the Foundation’s signature fundraiser — the Cherry Blossom Walk, Run, and Pooch Prance — each fall and has integrated breast care self-advocacy into its Wellness Program, sometimes drawing on the Foundation’s resources.

The Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation has twice presented Foxcroft with its Cherry Blossom Champion Award.

The Foundation has also designated three seats on its Board for Foxcroft students; these are currently held by senior Louise W. and juniors Hays T. and Hayden E. Foxcroft Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff also sits on the board of the organization. Since 2007, the CBBCF has granted $921,000, with 90 percent of the grants going to local organizations that treat and support breast cancer patients and survivors and that share the Foundation’s mission to defeat breast cancer through improvements in detection, treatment, education, and elimination.
