Students Explore and Apply Course Work through Museum Visits

By Sally E. ’20

The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Classes recently took a trip to Washington, DC, to visit Smithsonian museums tying into courses that we are taking. Our morning included visiting either the National Museum of Natural History or Air and Space Museum for STEAM-based courses.
I went to the Natural History Museum, where we were split up into groups to complete tasks around the museum, scavenging through exhibits to find the desired item. Based on a game called “Goosechase,” students were prompted to complete the given tasks with clues. One was to take a picture of a polyatomic substance and another, to find the equation in the exhibit for minerals and gems. This was a very educational way to learn about how the world is made up and to have time to see each exhibit.

Later in the day, our options were the National Portrait Gallery or the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Taking AP Human Geography, I visited the NMAAHC to explore the aspects of culture and traditions of African American people and how that affects the population and culture over time.

Overall, our time in Washington, DC, was very educational and gave us the opportunity to explore these different museums which relate back to our studies at Foxcroft.
