Foxcroft Students Compete in the Junior North American Field Hunter Championship in The Plains

Last weekend, Foxcroft students Gracie S. ’21, Lilly R. ’22, and Lilia S. ’22 were among more than 100 Junior riders from the United States and Canada who competed in the Junior North American Field Hunter Championship in The Plains, VA. To compete in the championship, each of the girls had to qualify at the local level and be sponsored by a hunt club.
During the competition, riders negotiate the course as a group simulating the pace and complexity of a real foxhunt, jumping fences and coops, negotiating gates, safety in the hunt field, and more. Riders are graded on riding form, appearance, and demonstrated knowledge of hunt etiquette and traditions. The entire field completes the course one time and then the top ten riders are selected for a ride-off across a second course where they are graded and scored by judges at every jump and obstacle as well as by judges riding in the field to determine the winners.

The girls rode in a field of 45 riders in the First Field - 13 and Over division. Gracie, representing the Long Run Woodford Hounds in Kentucky, placed 4th overall; Lilly, representing the Warrenton Hunt, placed 10th overall; and Lilia, representing the Blue Ridge Hunt, also participated in the championship.

What a great showing from Foxcroft girls!
