27 Foxcroft Girls Earn AP Scholar Awards

Two achieve select National AP Scholar designation

Two Foxcroft School students achieved the rare status of National Scholar to lead a group of 27 girls who earned 2019 AP Scholar Awards from the College Board for outstanding achievement on Advanced Placement Exams taken last spring.
May 2019 graduates Kayla Lee and Sylvia Yuan, who attend Clemson University and Stanford University, respectively, were among a select group named National AP Scholars. This is the second year that Sylvia achieved this honor and the fourth consecutive year that Foxcroft has had National Scholars, who must achieve an average grade of at least 4 (out of 5) on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of the tests.

Nearly half of the Class of 2019 and seven current seniors earned AP Scholar designation. This is the 16th consecutive year that the number of AP Scholars at Foxcroft has reached double-digits, a testament to the academic excellence fostered at the School.

Kayla and Sylvia were joined by current senior Kenzie G. and five members of the Class of 2019 in receiving AP Scholar with Distinction awards for achieving an average of at least 3.5 on all exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on at least five of them. Grace Chen (Colgate University), Amanda Clemente (University of Virginia), Chloe Green (University of Oxford), Anne K. (University of Virginia), and Grace MacDonald (Washington and Lee University) are among the graduate honorees.

Their classmates Elizabeth Burns (Christopher Newport University), Roxy Chen (Art Center College of Design), Clair Newton (University of Exeter), May Schulte (Virginia Tech), Lily Shahida (University of South Carolina), and Annie Zimmerman (The University of Texas at Austin) and current seniors Tam L., Nell N., Maya Y., and Cassie Z. received AP Scholars with Honor awards. They achieved scores of 3 or better on at least four tests with an average of 3.25 on all exams taken.

Nine AP Scholars scored 3 or higher on three or more AP exams: seniors Mimi S. and Joy W. and members of the Class of 2019 Haley Buffenbarger (University of Vermont), Sarah Elhilow (University of Georgia), Lily Fortsch (College of William and Mary), Anh-Thu Nguyen (University of Virginia), Megan Pumphrey (The Ohio State University), Jenna Torrance (Southern Methodist University), and Jordan Walker (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).

The College Board’s Advanced Placement program provides academically prepared students with an opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit or advanced standing in classes for successful performances on AP exams. The exams are graded on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest.
