Getting Our Hands Dirty at JK Community Farm

by Sydney M. ’23

On our Service Day earlier in September, a mix of freshmen and seniors took a trip to JK Community Farm in Purcellville, VA. JK Community Farm is a non-profit organization that provides food banks with crops and plants to store and eventually send off to families in need. Each year, the organization donates 50,000 pounds of fresh produce to food pantries.
In the state of Virginia, there are over 893,000 people who do not know where their next meal will come from, and farms that grow produce are trying to help donate as much food as they can. Volunteers play a big role in helping these organizations make a difference, and we got to go and help!

When we arrived, we were told what we would be doing and then walked down to the tomato plants with a few boxes. Our job was to pick all the tomatoes that were a about the size of our palms or bigger, and to toss the rotten ones. It didn’t take long to finish, so then we went over to the peppers. We picked as many as were ready, but that job was also a quick one so we moved to the sweet potatoes where we dug potatoes out and laid them on top of the dirt. Once all the potatoes were lined up, we bagged them all.

We had a lot of fun at JK Community Farm, and I cannot wait to go back another time!
