Foxcroft School to Host Coding Carnival for Middle School Girls

Area middle school girls are invited to attend an evening of carnival-style games and fun as they learn the theory behind programming on Wednesday, September 25, from 5:30-8pm.

Foxcroft School and its STEM Department are excited to invite area middle school girls to an evening of carnival-style fun and games designed to encourage and create awareness around one of the fastest-growing career fields: computing. The Coding Carnival will be held Wednesday, September 25 from 5:30-8pm in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library on campus.

There is no admission charge, but space is limited. To RSVP contact Karla Vargas, karla.vargas@foxcroft.org, or 540.687.4341. For questions about the event activities, contact Kristine Varney, kristine.varney@foxcroft.org
Recently commended by Virginia Sen. Mark R. Warner for being one of only six schools in the state, and 490 worldwide, to earn the AP Computer Science Principles Female Diversity Award, Foxcroft has designed this event specifically for middle school girls to use games and fun to practice their computational thinking skills as they learn the theory behind programming.

With interactive stations run by Foxcroft’s STEM and computer science students, the event will offer hands-on games:
  • Human Diagram Tracing will introduce students to the flow of a program and the different structures that are used, such as conditional statements to make decisions and loops to repeat the same activity multiple times.
  • Make Faces will reveal how to replace a series of steps in a program, in this case drawing instructions, with just one command.
  • Binary Magic will show how binary numbers are related to the number system students use every day.
  • Binary Bracelet will explain how binary numbers can be used to represent letters in the computer by having students making a binary bracelet of their initials.
  • Binary Decoding will teach students how binary numbers can be used to represent letters and numbers in the computer, then use the information to decode a secret message.
  • Label Hardware will introduce students to different hardware inside a computer.
  • Robot Cups will allow students to practice developing the commands needed to mimic the movements of a robot.
  • Matrix Magic will acquaint students with how the properties of numbers can assist in detecting errors through this magic trick.
  • Color Decryption will introduce the idea of compression algorithms and how images are stored on the computer.
Girls will also have the opportunity to play with a Sphero — a high-tech, app-run robot that encourages STEAM-based learning — and take photos with their favorite female scientists using a green screen photo booth with fun props. This promises to be a fun and educational evening for girls interested in computer science, coding, and programming.
