Newest Addition to the Student Art Collection: Photo by Grace C. ’19

This year’s addition to the Foxcroft School Permanent Student Art Collection, a beautiful photograph by senior Grace C. unveiled at Morning Meeting, is not only a testament to the School’s ability to help a girl find her passion and develop it, it's also an example of fine art created by our students.
The black-and-white photo of the campus road that runs out the back gate was, Grace recounted, taken in February 2016 after a huge snowstorm. It was her first assignment for her first photography class with her new camera. She was attempting to demonstrate depth of field and, “when I showed it to my photography teacher at the time, Mr. Gary Cox — who I am so excited to have here today — he looked at it and gave me a sign that I might have some ability,” says Grace.

“It was clear that Grace ‘got it’,” says Cox, who retired in 2017 and is visiting from Broken Arrow, OK. “Grace has a great natural ‘eye’ for photography and I knew she had great potential.”

Since then Grace has taken every photography course available, learning from Ms. Fisher as well as Mr. Cox. She started the Photograhy Club, has taken hundreds of photos for student publications, served as the Marketing/Communication Department intern, and won recognition in photography competitions. She has, indeed, found a “voice” through her art.

The Permanent Art Collection, which was started by Cox nearly 20 years ago, is a tribute to the artistic talent within our student body. Each year a student is selected to contribute an original work which is offered for sponsorship at the Parents’ Association Silent Auction. Last fall, the Marshall family (Ceci ’22) made the winning bid to commission this piece and will be listed along with Grace on the photograph’s plaque.
