Court Victory

Last weekend’s production of Legally Blonde: The Musical was so much fun it should be against the law! The cast of 25 students, along with four faculty members, sang and danced their way into the audience’s heart as their talent, energy, and some outstanding choreography brought the quirky characters, engaging story, and welcome “girl power” message to life.
A strong student crew, led by stage manager Bella B. ’19, kept Director Karin Thorndike’s tight and lively production running smoothly. Musical Director Eric Dombrowski’s pit orchestra, featuring violinist Shea H. ’21 and pianist Scarlett D. ’21, never missed a note (of note, anyway). In addition, the show included more and better dance numbers than had been seen in some time, thanks to choreography by Carolyn Burke, Foxcroft’s dance instructor, and the talented and graceful dance team captain Jordan W. ’19.

The cast featured a terrific combination of familiar and fresh faces in leads Seabrook B. ’19 and Elizabeth B. ’19. Seabrook is a familiar presence on the Foxcroft stage after starring in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella last year and The Addams Family the year before. This time she played Elle Woods, whose perfectly pink sorority life gets turned upside down when she enrolls at Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend (played by Jenna T. ’19) — and discovers that her social savvy and acute power of observation, together with some legal training, are a powerful combination.

Elizabeth, in her Foxcroft debut, did a wonderful job as fitness guru/accused murderer Brooke Wyndham, beginning with the terrific “Whipped Into Shape” number that opens the second act. Elle alone, among a large and mostly more experienced legal team, connects with their client and eventually wins the day while honoring Brooke’s request.

Deserving of special note, too, are the staunch trio of Jenna, Leah S. ’19, and Julia G. ’21, all willing and abundantly able to make the most of their male roles; the delightful threesome of Delta Nu/Greek Chorus girls Harriet B. ’21, Maddie J. ’22, and Jordan, and the vocal talents of juniors Abby A. and Krissa T. as Elle’s rival Vivienne, and beautician Paulette, respectively.

Krissa is hilarious as Paulette — who, along with the decidedly-unpreppy Emmett Forrest (played by Julia), plays an unlikely friend of Elle and key character in her transformation. Her rendition of the song "Ireland” was arguably the musical highlight of the evening.

The cast was strong from top to bottom (see the program) but the biggest laughs of the evening went to freshman Chelsie E. each time she strutted across the stage as Kyle, the UPS man that Paulette falls for.

Thanks also to faculty members Alex Northrup, Matt Mohler, Meghen Tuttle, and Amy Asbury, who added a lot with their cameo appearances and backstage singing. And let’s also throw a bone to those special stars, Bandaid Brown, who played Elle’s dog Bruiser, and Winston Thorndike as Rufus.

All in all, Legally Blonde offered a wonderful evening of entertainment; if you missed the performance, take a look at the video gallery.
