Freshman Cecilia M. took third place in the Junior Varsity Novice Over Fences competition and Foxcroft riders earned a ribbon in every class over the weekend at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Zone 3 Finals. Foxcroft’s Riding Team placed eighth among 12 schools in the Rustburg, VA show that included teams from Delaware, Maryland, and North Carolina, as well as Virginia.
Cecilia also picked up a sixth in the JV Novice Over Fences Individual Rider competition and Foxcroft School's horse Kitty, aka Dream Away, was awarded Honorable Mention for Best Horse or Pony at the show.
“After winning Regional Finals, our team members went to work to prepare for Zones Finals. “They rode a variety of different horses, rode in two-point, worked without their stirrups, and trotted lots of jumps,” said Assistant Director of Riding Allie Pelz, who shares team coaching responsibilities with Assistant Director of Riding Kendall Bear.
“Our senior captain, Kayla L., was the only rider in the group who had shown at Regional or Zone finals before this year,” Pelz added. “Even with the limited experience and plenty of nerves, our girls earned a ribbon in each team class and ended up eighth again teams from four states.”
Foxcroft and Chatham Hall each collected 11 points in the team competition, but seventh place went to Chatham because their riders scored more points in the Over-Fences classes. Two other Virginia teams — Foxtail Farm/Hampton Roads Academy and Clover Grove — were champion and reserve champion, respectively, and advanced to the National Finals, scheduled for April 26-28 in Harrisburg, PA.
Foxcroft's horse Kitty, aka Dream Away, was awarded Honorable Mention for Best Horse or Pony at Zone finals. Kitty, who was donated by alumna Brittany Hector ’17, took the Best Horse prize at Regionals in early March. Foxcroft School horse Mini, aka Just a Minute, also attended Zone Finals.
