The 2019 Shakespeare in the 'Burg Festival

...be not afraid of greatness: some
are born great, some achieve greatness, and some
have greatness thrust upon 'em. (Twelfth Night 2.5)

When the sixth annual Shakespeare in the ’Burg festival arrives on April 6-7 in Middleburg, Foxcroft will once again join this extraordinary celebration of the Bard as well as original works by contemporary playwrights during the festival weekend.
English Chair Anne Burridge, who forged the relationship with the festival in 2015, notes that several students and faculty will attend matinee and evening performances of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night this year, and Director of International Student Services Rebecca Wise served as a reader for the festival’s one-act play competition, which has attracted over 400 entrants from around the globe.

Here are some details of the weekend:
  • On Saturday, April 6 at 2pm, Ms. Thorndike and Ms. Burridge are delighted to accompany 20 of our students to the matinee performance of Twelfth Night at the Hill School.
  • Other faculty members will attend the evening performance of Shakespeare’s comedy, which features a talk from Helen Hayes Award Winner Louis Butelli of the Folger Shakespeare Library, who will speak prior to the performance at 7pm.
  • Wendy X. ’19 will help out Saturday evening as a student intern for the second year in a row.
  • On Sunday, April 7, at 11am, the company will perform staged readings of the three one-act play competition finalists at a champagne brunch, also at The Hill School.
  • Tickets to the Saturday evening performance of Twelfth Night are available to students, faculty, and administrators at a discounted price. Please contact Ms. Burridge if you have any questions.
  • Finally, we encourage the entire Foxcroft community of families and friends in the greater Middleburg area to attend as many events as possible in support of an uncommon community festival that takes the works of Shakespeare and those of aspiring playwrights from the page to the stage!
