Three Students Receive National Honors in Scholastic Art & Writing Award Contest

Congratulations to senior Roxy C. and sophomores Shea H. and Emma N. on being 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards National Medalists! All three girls received Silver Medals Wednesday when the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers announced the results of the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12.

More than 340,000 works in 29 categories — ranging from memoirs and critical essays to sculpture, editorial cartoons, and video game design — were submitted by students from every state in the U.S. this year.  Of those, only about 2,700 works become national medalists.

Roxy was recognized in the Mixed Media art category for her piece "The Afghan Girl.” Emma’s “Boys on the Swing” was selected in the Photography class and Shea’s “Autumn Loaf” earned Poetry honors. Silver medals are awarded for
“works demonstrating high honors on the national level,” according to the Scholastic website.
Foxcroft, which has not had a national medalist in recent years if ever, had a very strong showing this year’s Scholastic competition, with 28 works by 16 students earning regional recognition. Nine submissions received the highest regional distinction, Gold Keys, and advance to the national level, where they are judged by an impressive panel of creative-industry experts and may receive Gold, Silver, American Visions & Voices, and Gold or Silver with Distinction Portfolio medals.

All art and writing submissions are blindly judged based on the same three criteria that have been in place since the program’s founding in 1928: originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice. National winners may have their work published and displayed at the Art.Write.Now.2019 National Exhibition at Parsons School of Design at The New School, and Pratt Institute, both in New York. Top students are also invited to attend the week-long national celebration in New York City, which includes a ceremony at Carnegie Hall.
