Sixteen Students Earn Prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Nine of Foxcroft’s 28 honored works earn top regional honors and advance to national competition
Senior Roxy C. collected two Gold Keys — one each in writing and art — and one Silver Key to lead a group of 16 Foxcroft School students that had 28 outstanding works selected recently for special recognition in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Southeast Region-At-Large competition.
Including Roxy, eight Foxcroft students received a total of nine Gold Keys — the highest regional designation. The “golden” artists are Khaki K. ’19 (mixed media); Emma N. ’21, Ava B. ’21, and Tess O. ’21 (photography); and Sylvia Y. ’19 (printmaking). Courtney B. ’20 and Shea H. ’21 picked up Gold Keys in the poetry category. Emma, Khaki, and Courtney each picked up a Silver Key as well.
These worked are now being judged by a panel of noted visual and literary world leaders in New York City. The National Medalists they select will be announced on March 13 and are invited to a ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Their works included in a nationwide traveling exhibition. This year, students in grades 7-12 submitted more than 350,000 works of art and writing in 29 categories; advancing to the national competition is no small feat.
Foxcroft students collected, in total, 10 Silver Keys and nine Honorable Mentions. In addition to Roxy, Khaki, and Emma, Silvers for artwork went to senior Nicole C., junior Bella S., and sophomores Moni C-P. and Isobel D. In the writing arena, juniors Kenzie G., with a critical essay on voter suppression, and Maya Y., with a personal memoir, joined classmate Courtney with Silver recognition.
Sylvia took home four Honorable Mentions — three for art and one for a critical essay on The Tempest — to go with her Gold Key; Nicole got two, for sculpture and mixed media; and Hayden E. ’21, Tam L. ’20, and Ava, each received one.

Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in partnership with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country. It is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program recognizing accomplishments of students in middle and high school.
Among the artistic luminaries who have served as judges are Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Edwidge Danticat, David Sedaris, Nikki Giovanni, and Roz Chast. The list of past winners is equally impressive with Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Sylvia Plath, and filmmaker Ken Burns — as well as Foxcroft’s own Fine Arts Department Chair Karin Thorndike — among the honored.
