Seabrook B. ’19 and Grace M. ’19 Commit to Play Intercollegiate Field Hockey

Seniors Grace M. and Seabrook B., who helped Foxcroft School reach the state tournament title game last fall, confirmed their commitment to continue their educations and play intercollegiate field hockey at Washington & Lee University and Sewanee: The University of the South, respectively, in a joyful ceremony attended by their parents and the entire School community Monday.

Enthusiastic cheers filled Foxcroft’s Audrey Bruce Currier Library as the two student-athletes put their signatures on NCAA Division III celebratory signing forms. “I am delighted to be standing here with you to celebrate Seabrook and Grace as they prepare to play field hockey at their respective universities,” said Athletic Director and Field Hockey Coach Michelle Woodruff. “It’s a fabulous day for the Athletic Department as we celebrate your accomplishments and the next step in a long journey. Enjoy it!”

Seabrook and Grace join Haley B. as Foxcroft seniors committed to playing field hockey in college next year. Haley signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Vermont, an NCAA Division I institution, on December 10. Also in December, classmate Teddy S. committed to swim at DI Manhattan College, fueling a trend that has seen more Foxcroft athletes being recruited to play intercollegiate sports.

Seabrook scored seven goals and added four assists last season to make the All-Delaney Athletic Conference (DAC) First Team for the second year in a row. A speedy center forward, she had never played field hockey before coming to Foxcroft for ninth grade. By the end of her first season, she had been invited to join the varsity team for the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) state tournament, at which Foxcroft advanced to the championship game.

Seabrook finished her Foxcroft career with 39 goals in three full varsity seasons. She scored 24 goals in her junior year, when she became only the third Foxcroft player to score more than 20 goals in a season since the School joined the DAC in 2008.

“Seabrook’s intensity on the pitch is epic. She has the ability to fire up her teammates and create momentum,” said Woodruff. Seabrook will be joining a program at Sewanee that has a tradition of attracting top players from Foxcroft. Charlotte Baptiste ’02, Mo Baptiste ’05, Lynn Hancock ’05, and Caitlin McNaughton ’07 all played at Sewanee, with three of them earning All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors. Sewanee now plays in the Southern Athletic Association.

Grace, who will be the third sister to play field hockey at Washington & Lee, has been a stalwart on defense for Foxcroft during her four years of varsity play. Last fall, she earned First Team All-DAC honors for the second year in a row, and received Second Team All-State honors in VISAA Division II.

“Grace was a captain and the backbone of our defense last fall,” said Woodruff. “She is as thoughtful about field hockey as she is about her studies — a true student of the game, always wanting to get better. I could always count on her to help her teammates and to work hard each and every day.”

Grace matched her older sisters, Charlotte ’12 and Lilly ’14, by making First Team All-DAC honors; she will face an impressive legacy at W&L as well. Lilly was a two-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selection and was named the Generals’ Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2017, when the team won the ODAC championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Charlotte, now an assistant coach at Dickinson College, tied for most goals in her first season with the Generals, shared top point-scoring honors as a sophomore, received the Coaches Award as a junior, and served as captain her senior year.
