Global Cultures Week is Coming!

Foxcroft’s wonderful cultural, ethnic, and geographical diversity is enjoyed daily and celebrated often, but never more joyously than during Global Cultures Week, organized by the members of the Global Cultures Club. Everyone loves the outstanding, authentic food from around the world served at dinner all week. On Friday evening, a Spanish/Latin American fiesta (aka the all-school banquet) will kick off the festivities, followed by a Bazaar of games, contests, snacks, and an international market; and the International Gala, a longtime Foxcroft tradition featuring student performances, both traditional and modern, from around the world.

Global Cultures Week this year is February 11-15.  If you're in the neighborhood, please join us Friday evening! The Bazaar will begin at 7:15pm in Schoolhouse and performances are in FoxHound at 8pm.
The Bazaar was created last year to offer more opportunities for everyone to participate, and it was a great success. Activities this year will include the Chopstick Challenge, a “How Spicy Can You Eat?” contest, a calligraphy competition, “Guess the Flavor Challenge,” and more. Snacks from Korea, chopsticks from China, and a variety of jewelry, clothing, and gifts from our international students’ homelands will be on sale at the market, as well.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the games and there may be a “best dressed” award for students and faculty who wear traditional cultural outfits.

The Gala that follows, starting at 8pm, will feature dances from Korea, instrumental performances, traditional European songs, and vocal performances in Chinese.

The evening will be the culmination of an already-amazing week. Working with Brennan Kirby and Denise Bray and their Dining Hall staff, students have planned scrumptious ethnic meals for the community. Girls created menus and brought in family recipes — and, sometimes, family too! — and will spend afternoons helping to prepare and season dishes to make sure everything tastes like home.

Special thanks to the students taking the lead for the various dinners:
  • Tina L. ’21 and Tam L. ’20 for Chinese/Vietnamese night;
  • Hako I. ’21, Semin A. ’21, and Sabrina C. ’22 for Japanese/Korean dinner;
  • Gracie S. ’21 for a European evening; and
  • Joselyn A. ’20 and Elikem K. ’21 for the West African meal.
We especially look forward to Friday’s Spanish/Latin American Fiesta, spearheaded by Global Cultures Club Head Maria C-P. ’19, Co-Head Bianca M. ’21, and new member Moni C-P. ’21.

With 38 international students from 14 countries and many more students with distinct ethnic heritages to share, Foxcroft is truly blessed, not just during Global Cultures Week — but maybe especially during this designated time to celebrate our mini-global community.
