STEM Presents: Nigel Mould on Motion Detection, Machine Learning, Data Science, & You
Exciting things are happening in the STEM Department! "STEM Presents," a new speaker series established this year by Director of STEM Education Kristine Varney, will bring professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math to Foxcroft, where they'll have the opportunity to share their expertise and real-world experience with our students. The first of these presentations took place last Thursday, October 4, when Nigel Mould delved into the physics, computer science, medical, and math applications inherent in the work of his company, Stack Care. On October 4th, we welcomed our first STEM speaker, Mr. Nigel Mould (dad of Cecilia '22), to Foxcroft. In a short session during tutorial, students were able to engage in the world of physics and learn about the applications of motion sensors.
Mr. Mould addressed a brief history of sensors: evolving from having two separate parts (signal transmitters and signal receivers) to the modern version of honeycomb design (signal transmits from the device to all directions and reflects back). The main application of the sensors Mr. Mould’s company investigates is helping provide senior citizens better healthcare support more conveniently. Upon installation, the motion sensors detect the user’s motion every three seconds and upload the data to the operating cloud. Mr. Mould’s team is then able to understand the citizens’ living routine by analyzing motion data; they can then employ messages to warn the caregivers instantly based on whether an abnormal data set is suggesting the elders need additional help.

I enjoyed Mr. Mould’s presentation and hope that everyone who joined us did as well. After regular and AP Physics, the motion sensors on the tracks in the physics lab did not seem as engaging to me. I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity to hear about physics applications in real life and how such technology benefits more and more of our population. The discussions after Mr. Mould’s presentation opened up extensive possibilities for what the future of sensors could be. I am thrilled to see our generation, sooner than we all perceive, execute the ideas behind this great brilliance.
