Lucky Belts

By Lexi H. ’23

Over the summer I received an Inspired Learning Summer Grant to help pursue my interest in running a business. Through my Global Studies concentration, I had started working on a business idea, and with the help of the grant, I was able to launch it!
I created Lucky Belts, a company that sells handmade belts using elastic, fabric, or upcycled ties. I make all of the belts myself and sell them online through my website. In order to launch my business and start selling the belts, I took many steps to ensure a successful start.

One of the first steps in the process was to learn how to sew, as I had no prior sewing experience. This part started in the spring of 2020 when I was only intending to make belts for myself. I found I really enjoyed making them and decided that it would be a great project to work on for my concentration. Once I decided that I wanted to turn this idea into a business, I got to work ordering materials. This involved lots of research and budgeting to ensure that I was getting the best deals possible on good-quality materials.

Next, I started thinking of a name and an identity that I wanted to be associated with my brand. I decided on Lucky Belts because of some prior research I had done on neuromarketing and how it factors into brand identity. I’m very superstitious, especially with clothing accessories, so I thought that associating luck with my belts would create a positive identity.

While I was thinking of a name, I got to work on my website. This was a very tedious process and I am still finding ways to improve it. While building my website, I thought about ways to maximize user engagement while also keeping it user-friendly. I completely changed the design of my website multiple times but am happy with the current iteration.

Once I was satisfied with the website and ready to publish it, I applied for all of the legal documents and registrations necessary for a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC). This process took a little bit longer than expected, but once I received all of the documents, I was able to start selling!

Through my Inspired Learning Summer Grant project, I learned lots of valuable life skills including those necessary to run a business. I had to practice patience when things that were out of my hands took longer than expected, as well as good time management in order to meet the goals and deadlines that I set for myself. In addition to these skills, I also learned more about marketing, both through research and application, and the hands-on skills of building a website.

My website can be found at https://www.luckybeltsshop.com/ and, as of October 6, Lucky Belts can be found in the School Store!
