A Message from the Head of School

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that one month ago, Foxcroft pivoted to distance learning to accommodate Governor Northam’s order closing campuses throughout Virginia. I am so very proud of the way our dedicated and creative faculty have adapted their curriculum and pedagogy to an online platform and delivered their classes with the personalization, collaboration, and student-led initiatives that are hallmarks of our educational philosophy. I know you are as grateful as I am for their hard work, and I invite you to send me any messages that I can pass along to brighten their day.

Speaking of student leadership, I have also been proud of how our students are stepping up in these challenging circumstances and raising spirits with fun activities to keep us all connected. These community efforts are so important for keeping our emotional well-being strong.
Our seniors have truly stepped up to lead the way and remain positive and engaged. I am moved by their maturity in understanding that the situation is out of everyone’s control and that they have a role to play in serving their community and their School. Moreover, I am inspired by their creativity and leadership in adapting many of Foxcroft’s traditions and events during our time as a virtual school. You will read more about these end of year events in the Student Life section of the newsletter. As we discuss the end of our seniors’ tenure at Foxcroft, we want to celebrate how special the Class of 2020 is to us and to recognize that the Class of 2021 is also missing the opportunity to celebrate some special traditions with our graduates.

After meeting with the seniors and hearing what matters most to them, we have adopted a modified graduation plan. We will celebrate Commencement for the Class of 2020 and their parents on campus in Miss Charlotte's Garden on Thursday, August 13. It will be a modified ceremony with a focus on the girls receiving their diplomas in the garden. It will be held earlier in the morning than our usual Commencement to try to beat the heat and sun. In acknowledgment of those students and families who will not be able to attend in person, we will also have a portion of the celebration indoors, which will include a digital connection in order to be as inclusive as possible. We want to include underclassmen and extended families on campus but may have to limit in-person attendance based on CDC guidelines for gatherings. Further details will follow as we know more. If we have learned anything from the coronavirus pandemic, it is that we must remain flexible.

Most of all, we want our girls to know we love them all and will do all we can to make the rest of this challenging year special. Your feedback is important so that we continue to meet your daughters’ and our community’s needs, so please reach out to me with questions, ideas, and suggestions.

Be well; stay strong!
