Track & Field Scores 12 Points in State Championship Debut
On a hot, sunny day in the showcase event of the VISAA track and field season, Foxcroft’s young team delivered a strong performance in the Division II state championships held at Richmond's Sports Backers Stadium by scoring points in four events.
Led by freshman Gracen K.’s fourth-place finish in the high jump and fifth-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles, Foxcroft amassed 12 points overall, which far surpassed expectations from a team that was only formed this spring after a 12-year absence from the sport.
Gracen received five points for her 4-foot-8 performance in the high jump and four for her 18.37 seconds time in the hurdles.
Sophomore Betsy A. picked up a point for an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run in a personal best time of 2:38.79, the 4x100-meter team of Dami O. ’21, Finy Z. ’21, Jordan M. ’22, and Clare T. ’22 notched a point for an eighth-place showing and Jordan also got a point for clearing 4-4 in the high jump for an eighth-place finish.
"After seeing the girls who qualified work all season for this day, no performance truly caught me off guard,” said Coach Mohler about his first-year team. “We did a nice job of tapering in our final week and it really paid off as nearly everyone set a PR (personal record) in the States. Particularly sparkling was Betsy's five-second improvement in the 800 meters — she went from being the slowest qualifier to eighth in the state.
"If any one result could be called a surprise, I suppose it was the eighth-place finish by our 4x100 relay team which we cobbled together when two runners couldn't make it to Richmond,” he added. “Three perfect baton passes and a gutty anchor leg by Clare secured a point for our team. I could not be more proud of what happened on Saturday."
In addition to the scoring performances, Gracen came close to getting another point by finishing ninth in the 300m hurdles and freshman Elizabeth S. barely missed collecting a ribbon and a point for Foxcroft in the shot put by finishing just short of the No. 8 slot.Foxcroft finished 18th out of the 25 teams that competed in the Division II category.
