To generate enthusiasm for the upcoming Paul K. Bergan Poetry Festival, poets of all ages have recited works in Morning Meeting over the past two weeks. A special reading took place at today's Morning Meeting that honored the work of a woman known for so much at Foxcroft — Miss Charlotte. Two of her poems were read by seniors Miranda and Alicia, and English teach Alex Northrup gave context to the works by sharing their origin. Every Sunday during her headship, Miss Charlotte would deliver Sunday sermons. Many alumnae remember them vividly, commenting on what a great speaker Miss Charlotte was. Her words were inspirational as they encompassed a genuine knowledge of each girl and were tailored to them.
Continue reading for the two poems from her sermons chosen for Morning Meeting, and gain an authentic sense of who Miss Charlotte, Foxcroft's founder, was.
Under the wide and starry skies, Blue the hills where our Foxcroft lies —
Strong and deep are the binding ties That will hold our hearts through the years.
Foxcroft this pledge we give to thee Thy faith to keep eternally Thy dreams redream, thy memories To cherish with laughter and tears.
Be the Best of Whatever You Are
If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley - but he The best little scrub at the side of the rill; Be a busy if you can't be a tree. We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew, There's something for all of us here; There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do And the task we must do is the near. If you can't be a highway, then just be a trail. If you can't be a sun, be a star; It isn't by size that you win or you fail —
