Use Your Voice for Good: Civic Service and Social Action

As described by Head of School Cathy McGehee, “This year’s theme, 'Use Your Voice for Good: Civic Service and Social Action,' was selected in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which extended the right to vote to women, but which was not fully realized until decades later, as many women of color were denied suffrage. It also amplifies the social justice movement we are experiencing as a nation and community today."
In the video that accompanies this piece, Dr. Meghen Tuttle, STEM teacher and Wellness Education Coordinator, explains that the breakdown of our monthly themes follows the arc of a social movement from emerging voices, to coalescence, to organization, to resolution. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue around social movements (past and present). They will also explore their own role in the community by asking essential questions such as “How do I share my identity with others and allow others to share their identities with me?” “What things matter most to me?” “How do I identify and leverage the strengths of others?” — all with the intent of understanding what it means, in practice, to “use your voice for good.”

In August, we kicked off our first monthly theme of “Identify.” We asked our students to get to know themselves by creating a learner autobiography. Coordinated by Dr. Anne Mueller, French teacher and Global Studies Concentration Coordinator, and Jennifer Boudrye, Director of the Audrey Bruce Currier Library, this project prompts students to reflect on how education is talked about in their family, a time when they had a teacher who pushed them to achieve, how they navigate conflict with their roommates, and for new students, what they are most excited and nervous about when joining their new community. Moving into September our theme is “Share” and students will take their learner autobiographies and share them with their classroom teachers, dorm parents, and advisories.

As our theme takes us throughout the school year, we will continue to share ways our students are using their voices for good, both within the Foxcroft community and beyond!
