You're Invited: Diana Hardin Walker ’59 to Speak at Foxcroft

Diana Hardin Walker ’59, a renowned and award-winning photographer who served as one of Time’s White House photographers during the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations, has been named Foxcroft’s 2026 Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellow.

Walker ’59 will speak to the community on Tuesday, February 17, at 10:25am in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library at Foxcroft. This event is open to families and the local community. Admission is free, but seating is limited. RSVP by submitting this form or calling 540.687.4510. 

One of Time’s White House photographers during the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations, she covered the campaigns of Walter Mondale, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton. Walker ’59 has published three books of her work — PUBLIC & PRIVATE: Twenty Years Photographing the Presidency; THE BIGGER PICTURE: 30 Years of Portraits; and HILLARY: The Photographs of Diana Walker. She has done many features for People magazine, the Washingtonian, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine, and the Village Voice, and her photographs of Steve Jobs are featured in the Walter Isaacson biography, STEVE JOBS

Walker ’59 has won numerous awards from World Press, the White House News Photographers Association, and the National Press Photographers Association. She received the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s 2003 Paul Peck Award for her interpretation and portrayal of the Presidency. Her photographs are in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which honored her with a retrospective of her work, “Diana Walker/Photojournalist” in 2003. An exhibition from that retrospective traveled in the United States under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibit Service from 2003 to 2010. In 2012, Walker was honored by Time, Inc. with the Henry Luce Award for Life Achievement. 

The Briscoe Center for American History administers her archives at the University of Texas, Austin, where she was given a large retrospective show of her work in 2024. The catalog of that show, THROUGH HER LENS: The Photojournalism of Diana Walker, was published by Tower Books, an imprint of the University of Texas.

Walker ’59 is represented by the Addison Ripley Gallery in Washington DC, and the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York. She continues to do a small amount of freelance work when and if the magical joys of being a grandparent allow. She and her husband, Mallory, live in Washington, DC, and Sun Valley, ID.

The Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellowship program, offered through the generosity of the family and friends of Alison Harrison Goodyear, Foxcroft Class of 1929, brings distinguished speakers and performers to Foxcroft to deliver a keynote address and conduct small group seminars with students. 

Fellowship recipients during the program’s 56-year history include such remarkable voices as Maya Angelou, James Baker III, Doris Kearns Goodwin, David McCullough, Sally Ride, Barbara Walters, tech entrepreneur Sheena Allen, National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” Jennifer Pharr Davis, “Hello Fears” founder Michelle Poler, NPR’s Morning Edition host Rachel Martin, GenHERation founder Katlyn Grasso, The Social Institute founder Laura Tierney, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Marcia Chatelain, Former Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James, Haitian-American director and global philanthropist Claudine Oriol, renowned oceanographer and ocean advocate Dr. Sylvia Earle, author and inclusive design educator Grace Jun, and corporate social impact expert Elyse Cohen.
