Purpose and Integrity: Integrating DEIB into the Freshman Experience

Purpose and Integrity: Integrating DEIB into the Freshman Experience

At Foxcroft, we offer a one-semester course for all freshmen called Foxcroft 101: A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body. Foxcroft’s founder, Miss Charlotte Haxall Noland, adopted the School’s motto — mens sana in corpore sano — long before scientific research supported the correlation among physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.

This school year, I developed four lessons anchored in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, as well as in our DEIB Philosophy Statement. My integration into this class was a direct response to our Belonging Survey results. A philosophy statement without action is just an aspiration, so it is our duty to respond to the needs of our students. These lessons were a step toward living our DEIB commitments with purpose and integrity.

I am incredibly proud of the thoughtfulness, curiosity, and empathy these freshmen demonstrated throughout the semester. Watching them articulate their learning recently reminded me why this work matters so deeply. I look forward to continuing to build a community where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
