Model UN Participates in Learning Conference
Model UN Club participated in WIRC XII, the Washington International Relations Conference, on November 9, 2024.
This is the 12th year that the students of American University have hosted this learning conference, which is different from a competitive conference because half the day is spent on workshops teaching students how to do Model UN, and the other half of the day is putting those newly acquired skills to practice.
Besides learning from the nation’s top collegiate Model UN Team (AU is #1 for the third year in a row and Top 5 for the last six years), attending this conference also gives students a leg up going into AU’s competitive high school conference hosted on the campus from January 31-February 2, 2025.
This year’s participants in WIRC included Foxcroft Model UN veterans and new students. The workshops attended in the morning included “General Assembly 101,” “Crisis 101,” “Blocing in General Assembly,” and “Crisis Notes.” In the afternoon, some students participated in a General Assembly (GA) simulation based on the United Nations Human Rights Council, while others participated in a Crisis Committee (Crisis) simulation based on the Congress of the Republic of Peru. The GA group worked on resolutions to promote indigenous rights in Latin America, while the Crisis group addressed balancing socialism and stability in pos-Pedro Castillo, Peru. The students learned a lot about their topics in preparation for the conference, but they learned a lot more about themselves when it came to public speaking, diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise.
“I had an awesome time at WIRC this year,” shared Riley G. ’27. “I was really intimidated by the idea of going to a big conference because I had never done Model UN before, but the people running the conference were super helpful and patient. It really felt like a space for learning. (I know most of the parliamentary procedure now!) It gave me the room to let my leadership skills shine. At the end of the day, I felt like I had done a good job. I really liked it.”
We are excited about our upcoming conferences, including AmeriMUNC in January.
