Ice Cream, Meetings, and College Prep: My Day Leading Foxcroft

Ice Cream, Meetings, and College Prep: My Day Leading Foxcroft

On April 24, I was given the opportunity to be Head of School for the day. I spent the whole school day with Dr. Kaenzig, talking about what we could improve about the Foxcroft experience and my personal feelings about it.

My day started with doing research on best practices for girls' education. I was surprised that all of the information I found, such as elevating student voices, addressing mental health and stress, not limiting stereotypes, enhancing confidence and collaborative ability, is already being practiced at Foxcroft. After that, I went to the Morning Meeting and announced that there was going to be ice cream at lunch. Sadly, one of the seniors stole my thunder by accident, by asking if there was ice cream before I could announce it. We laughed about it for the rest of the day. It was gloriously hilarious.

During lunch, my friends Gracie J. ’28, Christen R. ’28, Jensy C. ’28, Berin O. ’28, Coco E. ’28, Georgie A. ’28, and I talked with Dr. Kaenzig about school improvements. I was so surprised that Dr. Kaenzig let so many of my friends sit with us during lunch, and she actively listened to what we were saying the whole time. I was honored to see that Dr. Kaenzig was present and genuinely valued our opinions. One of the topics that came up was how to improve the Dining Hall, especially how to deal with food allergies.

My parents took the whole afternoon off from work to join me and Dr. Kaenzig after lunch. The discussion revolved around the parents' side of Foxcroft. It was a surprise for my parents and me that she wanted to hear what could be improved for the students and their parents. First, my parents shared how very pleased they are with all my past and present teachers. Then my parents were very focused on college preparation and making sure Foxcroft continued to focus on getting students into the best colleges possible.

It was a real treat hanging out with Dr. Kaenzig. She is an outstanding leader, and I enjoyed watching her leadership style.
