Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations
Each year, students come from across the globe to live and learn at Foxcroft. This year, the student body represents 18 countries, and our diverse community of global citizens recognizes important cultural celebrations all year round. From September 15 to October 15, the community recognized Hispanic Heritage Month, with Spanish Club leading efforts through Morning Meeting presentations and a Hispanic Heritage Month Banquet finale. Whether speaking passionately about the impact of gentrification in Puerto Rico articulated through music or taking the mic to share how their Hispanic culture has shaped their identity and values, Foxcroft girls demonstrated empathy, respect, and a worldview that moved the entire community.
The culminating event — the Hispanic Heritage Month Program and Banquet — was truly wonderful. Thank you to the student leaders of Spanish Club: Heads Ariana A. ’26, Valeska F. ’26, and Raven L. ’26, Assistant Heads Jensy C. ’28 and Sophie A. ’28, and faculty advisor Vilma Riestra for putting together the amazing event; to our talented Treble Club performers: Clair W. ’28, Katharina E. ’27, Youki T. ’27, Taitum M. ’29, Olivia M. ’27, and Riley G. ’26; and to all the students who spoke with such emotion and integrity. A special thank you to our guest performers who shared their culture and passion through dance: a local Mexican Folkloric Dance group coordinated by the aunt of Sophia A. ’26, and Melissa Lopez ’00 P’25, who shared her passion for flamenco. Spanish Club Co-Head Raven L. ’26 shares her reflections on the event and month-long celebration below.
This year, our Hispanic Heritage Month theme was “Semillas de Esperanza,” which means “Seeds of Hope.” From September 15 to October 15, we celebrated the roots, traditions, and cultures that connect us, and the hope that grows when we share them with others.
Throughout the month, Spanish Club spoke at Morning Meetings about different parts of Hispanic and Latino culture. Ariana A. ’26 and Kyla P. ’26 talked about the meaning behind Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny’s new album, and I gave a presentation about the difference between being Latino and Hispanic, and why both matter.
On Monday, October 13, we closed the month with our Hispanic Heritage Banquet. Spanish Club organized everything from the food and music to the performances and decorations. We had little kids dance a traditional Mexican dance, Treble Club performed “Volver, Volver,” and we all got to enjoy pupusas and horchata for dinner, which were incredible!
The banquet was a reminder of how the seeds of hope we plant today can grow into something lasting. We’re so grateful for everyone who helped make it special, and I can’t wait to hear about next year’s celebration.
