Foxcroft Students Headed to Summer Leadership Programs

Foxcroft Students Headed to Summer Leadership Programs

Four Foxcroft students have been accepted into summer leadership programs hosted by outside organizations: the NOVEC Youth Tour and the Leadership Summer Internship Program. Tailored to each student’s interests, these programs enhance the leadership foundation established at Foxcroft.

NOVEC Youth Tour

In June, sophomore Hadley D. will participate in the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) Youth Tour, where she will meet congressional representatives; tour museums, historic sites, and memorials; and enjoy special events in Washington, DC.

“The NOVEC Youth Leadership Tour is important to me because it’s an opportunity to grow as a leader while learning more about how our government and electric cooperatives work,” shared Hadley. “I’m especially excited to meet other students from different backgrounds who are also passionate about leadership and making a difference in their communities. While I haven’t participated in formal leadership programs like this before, I’ve always enjoyed taking on leadership roles in activities off campus, whether helping organize events, volunteering, or supporting others in my community. I see this program as a great next step in building those skills and expanding my impact!”

Leadership Initiatives Summer Internship Program

Three students — junior Ariana A. and freshmen Olivia R. and Kacy D. — were awarded scholarships through the Leadership Initiatives Summer Internship Program, which allows high school students to gain real-world experience and explore career paths through internships that align with their passions. Ariana, Olivia, and Kacy have all enrolled in the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship held at Georgetown University in Washington, DC; see more from each girl below.

Ariana A. ’26
"I applied for an Advanced Medical and Public Health Internship with Leadership Initiatives and will be living and studying at Georgetown University for a week filled with lectures, workshops, and hands-on training using medical instruments. I am focused on becoming a radiologist and studying medicine in college, so attending a medical internship will help me gain more experience and understand the process of being a medical professional while broadening my horizons with the different types of medical specialties. This program is also important because it is the first internship I will be attending.

"I am very excited to be living on a college campus — it will be a jumpstart to my college experience and help me discover what I want in a school. Additionally, I am looking forward to being surrounded by other students with similar interests and making connections with professors and mentors. For the workshops, I am most looking forward to the one focused on diagnosing a patient's condition. At the program, they host a workshop that offers interns the chance to diagnose a patient in sub-Saharan Africa in real time. I have a deep interest in understanding the human body and am eager to learn how doctors can assess and determine treatments for various conditions. I believe this workshop will help me gain the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need."

"There are many different ways students can enhance their knowledge and gain exposure to possible future careers. For this upcoming summer, I have been given the opportunity to attend the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship at Georgetown University. This internship is about gaining insight into public health/third-world countries’ health systems. It also allows you to get hands-on experience directly from the doctors at Georgetown. We’ll learn about the four major diseases that affect sub-Saharan Africa, and how to diagnose and treat them. We will also create campaigns to raise awareness about them and use simulation units to perform numerous medical procedures.

"This specific internship opportunity is important to me because I hope to pursue a career in medicine specifically, and hopefully become a surgeon. I also want to learn about public health concerns in general to better understand how to help as many people as possible. Throughout my childhood, I’ve watched my mom perform many surgeries and medical procedures. Although those were on animals, they sparked an interest in me in the medical field… but in human medicine. I’m most excited to experience the simulation units where we will learn how to perform an upper endoscopy, an ultrasound, and draw blood. I am also excited to learn about diseases overall and the ways to treat them. I haven’t participated in anything quite like this before, so I am looking forward to this new experience and terrific opportunity!"

Kacy D. ’28

"I thought the Advanced Medical and Public Health Internship with Leadership Initiatives would be fun to learn about medical and health sciences. I am most excited about using the Microsoft and Facebook Oculus Rift technology to diagnose a real patient in Africa with a doctor in real-time and to recommend treatment. In the program, I am going to perform an upper endoscopy, an abdominal ultrasound, and learn how to perform phlebotomy."
