Foreign Service Officer Shares Experience with International Relations Class

Foreign Service Officer Breanna Green shared her journey from a Rangel Fellow to her current assignment on detail to the International Joint Commission, where she works with water boundary issues between the United States and Canada.

Green, invited by History Department Chair Stephanie Young ’00, showed International Relations students how being a Foreign Service officer can include domestic work as well as international work during the October 3 visit. It was fascinating and fun to learn about her varied experiences, from negotiating treaties at the United Nations to organizing a state visit for then Secretary of State Hilary Clinton in Madrid, Spain.

The girls were intrigued to learn about the different areas of Foreign Service: political, commerce/economic, and consular work. They asked questions about dealing with heads of state, what happens when you have a baby abroad, and what if you don’t know anything about the subject of your new appointment? All in all, it was an engaging experience for the girls and our guest.

At lunch, Green sat down with a group of girls interested in Spelman College, her alma mater. They had lots of questions about her time at Spelman; her opportunities, as well as any limitations. Green also put students in touch with the regional admissions representative for Spelman! It was an enriching visit, and we look forward to hosting her again in the future.
