Creating Connection One Performance at a Time
Master Sgt. Kristin J. Cazenave visited Foxcroft to share her military journey with students in honor of Veterans Day. She is a trumpeter with the Ceremonial Brass of the United States Air Force Band, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C.
“We generally are associated with what is called soft power,” shared Cazenave. “We create connection, and that's an interesting and exciting piece that I like to be part of.”
A graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance, Cazenave’s career in the Air Force began in 2011, but she hadn’t even considered the military until her senior year. “A lot of my friends started taking auditions, and quite a few ended up in the service. I thought that was actually very cool to get to serve your country doing what you love. So I ended up winning an audition and joining.”
Cazenave spoke about some of her responsibilities, including playing taps at Arlington National Cemetery for over 800 funerals annually and greeting heads of state. The band's mission includes honoring, inspiring, and connecting, sometimes in remote or tense areas. She also shared experiences from deployments, such as playing in Peru and Switzerland.
“I'm the NCOIC, which is non-commissioned officer in charge of priority operations, so any events that have musical support for the President, Vice President, Secretary of War, Secretary of the Air Force; I am in charge of organizing musical support for that,” she concluded. “It's really cool to be part of those discussions and be at that table with those people. I'm blessed to get to do what I do for our country, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.”
After speaking, Cazenave answered multiple questions from curious students. Foxcroft would like to thank Master Sgt. Cazenave for her service and for sharing her story.
